Tories promote sports tuition plans
The Conservatives have revealed their pledge to offer every child two hours of free sports tuition a week in a bid to tackle obesity.
Shadow Home Secretary David Davis today unveiled a policy to make up to £250 million per year available for local sports clubs to deliver after-school sport for youngsters.
“Under Labour more than five million of our children are being denied their right to adequate sporting opportunity,” stated Mr Davis.
“We have the fastest growing rate of obesity in the developed world.
“Our plans will empower those volunteers in local sports clubs to provide our children and young people with varied and quality sporting experiences.”
Under the scheme children would be able to choose the sport that they wish to be involved in as long as it is available in their locality.
The plans are to be sponsored by up to £750m of Lottery funding over a three year period.
Shadow Sports Minister Lord Moynihan added: “We aim to shift the emphasis on after-school sport provision away from our over-stretched teachers and schools directly into the 151,000 sports clubs in the UK.”
