Sedgefield Tory candidate pulls out

The Conservative Prospective Parliamentary Candidate for Sedgefield has dropped plans to stand for Parliament after he was quoted as saying he believed in the destruction of public services.

Danny Kruger, who had been set to challenge Tony Blair, also works in the Conservative research unit.

He was quoted by The Guardian newspaper as saying: “We plan to introduce a period of creative destruction in the public services.”

In a statement, the party said that Mr Kruger’s remark had been taken out of context and he fully supported the Conservatives policies on public services. But, “in order to avoid any further misrepresentation of his views and any damage to the party, he has decided not to stand in the Sedgefield constituency at the next election.

“Michael Howard has accepted his decision with regret, and accepts that the remark has been taken out of context. He acknowledges Danny’s contribution to the party and looks forward to his continuing support.”
