Green Party launches ‘achievable’ pledge card
The Green Party in England and Wales is launching a new pledge card, which contains only “realistic” and “achievable” promises.
Unlike many other political parties, which publish pledges on what they would do if in government, the Green Party is putting forward pledges that it can keep regardless of whether it comes to power or not.
These include tackling climate change by exposing how the Government’s efforts rely on subsidising nuclear power, defending schools and hospitals by exposing the true costs of Private Finance Initiatives, and defending free speech by investigating Government attempts to undermine the independence of the BBC.
The Green Party is hopeful of making a breakthrough at Westminster at the next general election, with the seats of Brighton Pavilion, Lewisham Deptford, Norwich South, and Leeds West its top targets.
Green Party London Assembly member Darren Johnson, who is standing in Lewisham Deptford, said the new pledges reflected the prospective Green MPs desire to be the campaigners, scandal-exposers, and whistleblowers of the new Parliament.
He added: “The Green Party will not form a government after May 5, but even one Green MP would be a radical, outspoken voice for the concerns of ordinary people against the political status quo.”
Other pledges on the card include keeping the peace by demanding information to ensure British troops have not colluded with US war crimes, protecting developing countries by monitoring overseas aid, and keeping big business out of government decisions by exposing “the revolving door between government and private consultancy”.
