Shipman inquest restarts
The inquest into the death of serial killer Harold Shipman will resume today.
Britain’s most prolific serial killer was found hanging in his cell at Wakefield Prison in January 2004.
The 57-year-old was jailed for life in 2000 after being found guilty of killing 15 patients by lethal injection.
However, a public inquiry into his crimes established that Shipman probably murdered about 250 people between 1971 and 1998.
The jury for the inquest, which was first opened more than a year ago, will be sworn in today at Leeds crown court. The proceedings are likely to last a fortnight.
Last week it was revealed that Shipman’s body was cremated in Sheffield in March.
The GP’s widow, Primrose, was reportedly advised against burying him because of fears that his grave would be desecrated.
