Scottish Greens pledge alternative to ‘politics-as-usual’
The Scottish Green Party today said that only green politics provides a genuine alternative to the ‘politics-as-usual’ approach of other parties.
Launching its election manifesto using the “People, Planet, Peace” slogan used by its sister party in England and Wales, it said that if everyone who thought green voted green at the general election then Scotland could send the first Green MP to Westminster on May 5.
Key planks of the manifesto are public interest before big business profits, action on climate change and a peaceful approach to reducing global conflict.
The party is hoping to build on last year’s European elections when it was second to Labour in Glasgow Kelvin and Edinburgh North and Leith.
It already has seven MSPs including co-convenor’s Shiona Baird and Robin Harper.
Ms Baird said: “All the main parties put profit above all else but we say that people and the environment should go centre-stage.”
Mr Harper added: “Support for the Greens is growing all the time, and in some areas we are extremely close to achieving the breakthrough into Westminster.”
Developing renewable energy, taxing climate-busting pollution, introducing a Citizen’s Income and scrapping ID cards are among the pledges included in the manifesto.
