Councillor launches legal challenge to postal voting
A Birmingham councillor is launching a legal challenge that could delay the general election.
John Hemming, deputy leader of Birmingham City Council, will apply for a judicial review of the May 5 poll, requesting extra safeguards to protect against electoral fraud.
It follows a recent court case in Birmingham, in which the judge said the scale of electoral fraud in two Birmingham wards would disgrace a “banana republic”.
The Liberal Democrat councillor wants an extension of the deadline for appeals against election results, and for postal votes to be counted separately from non-postal votes cast at the general election.
On Monday, Respect leader George Galloway said he would ask the High Court to suspend postal voting on demand.
