Chewing gum tax for Liverpool?
Liverpool could soon become the first city in Britain to introduce a chewing gum tax.
The city council is meeting later this week to discuss the levy, which is aimed at funding a cleaning campaign.
Under the proposals, the council hopes to raise £100,000 a year to pay for the removal of chewing gum from the city’s streets by adding 1p to the price of each packet.
“I want the council to note and recognise the serious problems caused to our streets by chewing gum litter,” said council leader Mike Storey, who backs the move.
Chewing gum is notoriously difficult to clean up, requiring specialist equipment like high-powered jets of water.
