Labour expels rebel Welsh members

Around 20 members of the Labour Party in Wales have been ‘auto expelled’ from the party.

The action comes after former Labour mayor turned independent candidate Peter Law secured a stunning election victory in Blaenau Gwent. He stood against the official Labour candidate after a row about the imposition of an all-woman shortlist in the constituency.

Last night Labour’s ruling council the National Executive Committee confirmed the expulsion of around 20 Labour members who it accuses of campaigning for Mr Law.

Under Labour Party rules, anyone who supports a candidate other than Labour’s official nomination is automatically excluded from the party.
