Congratulations pour in for Liverpool
Congratulations from across the political spectrum have poured in for Liverpool FC after their stunning Champions’ League final victory over AC Milan last night.
The underdogs fought back from 3-0 down at half time to clinch victory in a dramatic penalty shootout.
This was Liverpool’s fifth European cup win, and as such the trophy will remain permanently at their home ground, Anfield.
Tony Blair, who opened Prime Minister’s Question Time yesterday by wishing Liverpool good luck, sent a message of congratulation to the team directly after the result.
Mr Blair said: “Unbelievable. Incredible. Brilliant. The whole country is very proud of you.”
The Conservatives were also ecstatic – particularly as leader Michael Howard is a Reds fan.
Shadow Sports Secretary Theresa May, said: “It will be no surprise to learn that the leader of the Conservative Party was rooting for a Liverpool win but everyone in the country will want to pay tribute to the team and the people of Liverpool.
“This is a fantastic result and I hope that it leads to a summer of success for British sport culminating in London’s successful Olympic bid.”
In what is likely to be an almost greater boost to the Olympic bid and English football there were few reports of any trouble either in Turkey or Liverpool.
Liverpool fans are now arriving back in Liverpool to continue the celebrations with an open top bus parade set to begin at 1830BST.
