Labour on course for third term
Labour is on course for an unprecedented third consecutive term of office, according to poll published on Friday.
A YouGov poll for The Daily Telegraph has Labour on 37 per cent with the Tories three behind. Both are up one point.
The Liberal Democrats are down one to 22 per cent.
A second poll by Mori for The Sun newspaper has Labour on 39 per cent, with Michael Howard’s party seven points behind on 32 per cent and the Lib Dems on 22 points.
Pollsters said both surveys suggest to a landslide poll victory for Mr Blair, albeit with a reduced majority of around 130.
On average, Labour has led the polls by five points since the May 5 election date was announced last week.
In terms of who would make the best leader, Mr Blair is up two points with a 38 per cent rating.
Mr Howard is also up one but some way off on 25 per cent. Charles Kennedy is on 18.
On economic competence, Labour has a clear lead with 48 per cent of voters backing the Government. The Tories are on 29.
