Greens furious after Channel Four subtitle gaffe

Channel Four has apologised to the Green Party after broadcasting its election video with subtitles from the United Kingdom Independence Party.

Instead of being presented with subtitles explaining the Green’s philosophy and policies, viewers tuning in at 19.55 BST read UKIP’s stance on political correctness, immigration and Europe.

The out of synch subtitles ran for three of the broadcast’s five minutes.

“It was a rare and honest mistake,” a Channel Four spokesman said later.

“The subtitles were stopped before the end of the programme and replaced with an apology. Only a small percentage of viewers would have been affected.”

But a Green Party spokesman said the cock up was “pretty awful”,

“It totally lost the message,” he said

“UKIP’s policies are completely alien to Green thinking and progressive politics and it is something we totally disagree with.”

UKIP’s campaign video was aired on Friday evening.

The Green Party’s broadcast was directed by Repo Man filmmaker Alex Cox and used a Franz Ferdinand soundtrack.
