Ukip poll finds support for EU referendum
Half of voters would like to see Britain withdraw from the European Union, according to a poll commissioned by the UK Independence party (Ukip).
Six out of ten voters (62 per cent) said a referendum on membership of the EU was needed, while a quarter said such a move was unnecessary, according to the YouGov survey.
When asked to choose between Britain remaining an EU member, and Britain leaving and replacing membership with a free trade agreement, 34 per cent took the first option, half took the second and 17 per cent said they did not know.
Ukip MEP Nigel Farage said the poll demonstrated “a clear majority” of voters wanted a free trade agreement with the EU rather than membership. As such a referendum was necessary on Britain’s continued membership, he added.
“How much longer can the government drag the British people in a direction they have no wish to travel in?” he asked.
