Howarth’s ‘intolerant’ message attacked by Muslim group
A radical Muslim group has reacted angrily to comments made by the shadow defence secretary Gerald Howarth.
Mr Howarth said Muslims who “don’t like our way of life” should “get out” out of the country and Islamic extremists are comparable to pro-Soviet Cold War sentiments.
In a statement, Islamic party Hizb ut-Tahrir insisted “legitimate political dissent” should not be suppressed, criticising the views expressed by Mr Howarth.
Spokesman Dr Imran Waheed said Mr Howarth’s remarks were “intolerant and narrow minded” and he emphasised that the vast majority of Muslims expressed dissent through non-violent means.
Dr Waheed also flagged up comments made earlier this week by foreign secretary Jack Straw, who acknowledged that the British presence in Iraq had proved “part of the problem”.
