Better public services key to helping poorest
Improvement to public services is the key to helping the most disadvantaged in the UK, a government report has said.
The report, compiled by the government’s Social Exclusion Unit (SEU), is the result of a series of informal questionnaires and formal consultations carried out last winter.
Local government and social exclusion minister Phil Woolas said the report would help focus on areas where the SEU had already been successful and where “further work and development is needed”.
“The next step is to take forward this work and continue to make a positive difference to disadvantaged people within our communities,” he said.
The SEU identified areas for improvement in public services such as the provision of integrated services, making services more flexible to the needs of different groups, and improving awareness of the services already available.
A series of government action plans to address these areas will be published over the autumn and winter.
