Record numbers had university places confirmed

Record numbers of students had confirmation of their places at university within a few hours of getting their results, the university admissions service, Ucas, has said.

A total of 295,443 applicants had been accepted by yesterday afternoon – more than ten per cent higher than the numbers accepted at the same time last year.

“I want to congratulate all those students for whom today represents the reward for all their efforts and hard work,” said Ucas chief executive Anthony McClaran last night.

He said Ucas would work hard to provide information and services for those without places.

Nearly 100,000 students are in that position, and are currently going through the ‘clearing’ system to find a suitable course at a university not among their top choices. Competition is likely to be fierce thanks to the record A-level pass rates and top grades.
