Bombers’ families will not attend memorial
The families of the suicide bombers who carried out the London terror attacks in July will not be invited to a victims’ memorial service, officials have said.
The move follows suggestions by two leading Anglican bishops that such an invitation would send a message of reconciliation to the Islamic community. The uncle of bomber Shehzad Tanweer suggested he would attend if invited.
But the idea of inviting family members drew a complaint from the deputy chairman of the London Assembly, Brian Coleman, who described the suggestion as “political correctness gone mad”.
“These bishops have about as much understanding about grief as they do about community relations. They should go on a bereavement counselling course,” he said.
Government officials have told reporters the families of bombers will not be invited.
The memorial service will be held at St Paul’s cathedral on November 1st and will be attended by the prime minister and the Queen.
