Scotland appoints new head of judiciary

Lord Hamilton has been appointed as Scotland’s most senior judge, it was announced today.

He replaces Lord Cullen of Whitekirk, who retires from the post of lord president this week.

Speaking about the decision, first minister Jack McConell said: “This is a time of great change and reform in our courts – changes that are inspiring renewed confidence in our legal system.

“I am sure that Lord Hamilton will build on the legacy left by Lord Cullen in this regard and play a significant and influential role in the continued modernisation of our court system.”

The peer was nominated by the first minister in consultation with a special panel of judicial and lay experts, and will preside over the court of session and high court, as well as his more general duties.
