Galloway under fire over terror comments
George Galloway has come under fire after he blamed yesterday’s bombings in London partly on UK foreign policy.
Defence minister Adam Ingram accused the Respect MP for Bethnal Green and Bow of “dipping his poisonous tongue in a pool of blood” after he made a statement saying the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq had helped to bring about the attacks.
“The loss of innocent lives, whether in this country or Iraq, is precisely the result of a world that has become a less safe and peaceful place in recent years,” Mr Galloway said.
But Mr Ingram, addressing the Commons last night, termed such comments “disgraceful”, to which Mr Galloway responded by calling him a “foul-mouthed … thug”.
Deputy speaker Sylvia Heal warned both men to calm down and had to intervene to restore order.
Mr Galloway, who has been an outspoken critic of the war on terror and formed the Respect party on an anti-war agenda, earlier said the attacks, which left at least 37 dead and 700 injured, were partly because the government ignored his and others’ warnings.
“We have worked without rest to remove the causes of such violence from our world,” he said
“We argued, as did the security services in this country, that the attacks on Afghanistan and Iraq would increase the threat of terrorist attack in Britain.
“Tragically Londoners have now paid the price of the government ignoring such warnings.”
