Lib Dem donor found guilty
The Liberal Democrat’s biggest donor, Michael Brown, has been found guilty of theft.
Brown, 42, was accused of nine charges, including fraud and money laundering. He denied all charges.
“We took that money in good faith,” Lib Dem leader Nick Clegg told the BBC.
“It’s recognised we did all the due diligence checks we could have.”
His donation to the Lib Dems of £2.4 million was the largest in the party’s history.
The prosecution claimed Brown stole over £7 million from former Manchester United chairman Charles Martin Edwards.
The jury was sent home from Southwark crown court on yesterday after initially failing to reach a verdict.
