MPs receive pay rise

MPs will receive a 2.33 per cent pay rise from April 1st, bringing their parliamentary pay up from £63,291 to £64,766.
Ministers, however, would have their ministerial pay frozen.
Matthew Elliott, chief executive at the TaxPayers’ Alliance said: “Too many MPs are still living high on the hog, despite growing public concern at how our money is being spent.
“People are sick of the cost of Parliament rising relentlessly year on year, accompanied by mounting evidence that much of the money is being misspent.”
The increase corresponds to new rules which fixed the rise the average received by 15 different groups of public sector workers, including judges, NHS workers and teachers.
The rise comes as home secretary Jacqui Smith resists calls for her resignation after it emerged she claimed public money for two porn films on her television subscription.
MPs basic pay is topped up by up to £180,000 a year for expenses, including office costs, staff salaries, travelling costs and a second home allowance.
Ministers are then given an additional salary for their government functions.
