Terms of Iraq war inquiry expected soon

An announcement on the Iraq war inquiry could be made by the end of the week, it has been reported.
Several newspapers have suggested an official announcement outlining the nature of such an inquiry could be made as the prime minister attempts to win some popularity with those who opposed the ousting of Saddam Hussein in spring 2003.
Until now the government has resisted such calls by saying it would be inappropriate to examine the war while British forces remained in Iraq.
Following the final withdrawal of troops from Basra, a process which began on April 30th, this argument no longer holds.
Downing Street said the prime minister was consulting the Cabinet secretary on the “appropriate form” of the inquiry.
“We’re not in a position to make a formal announcement at this point,” the prime minister’s spokesman said.
Foreign secretary David Miliband told the Commons in March an inquiry would be announced as soon as practicable after the final exit of British troops.
