Super Furry Animals call for Welsh power

Prominent Welsh figures including the Super Furry Animals and actor Matthew Rhys are among those who have signed a declaration calling for the Welsh Assembly to be handed greater powers.
The 100-strong signatures gathered by campaign group Tomorrow’s Wales also include those of the Archbishop of Wales, national poets Gillian Clarke and Gwyneth Lewis and British Lions team manager Gerald Davies.
The declaration states that “the creation of a system of effective democratic governance for Wales is a matter of major importance”.
Among its demands is constitutional stability achieved by “concentrating on the implementation of a policy programme that can get to grips with the problems and release the potential of Wales”.
It concludes: “We believe that this would best be achieved by the granting of primary law-making powers to the National Assembly, and we call for the holding of a referendum to that end.”
The tenth anniversary of the first meeting of the Welsh Assembly will be marked on July 1st.
Its founding first secretary, Alun Michael, recently told politics.co.uk that moves towards the next stage of reform were gathering momentum.
