The Lib Dem-Tory coalition intends to create over 100 new peers to smooth the flow of its legislation, according to media reports.

David Cameron and Nick Clegg previously agreed to reshape the Lords so it reflects the outcome of the general election, in which the Lib Dems and Tories together secured 59% of the vote.

The Times reports that Liberal Democrat estimates foresee a rise in the number of Tory peers from 186 to 263 and a rise in Lib Dem peers from 72 to 167.

The proportional make up of the Lords is a stop-gap until the coalition can complete its reform into a second chamber constituted through proportional representation.

Gordon Brown’s resignation honours list is expected soon.

Media speculation indicates it will include former deputy prime minister John Prescott, prime ministerial aide Sue Nye, former education secretary Ruth Kelly and former defence secretary Des Browne.
