NASUWT: Talent is being squandered
Teachers’ union NASUWT’s general secretary Chris Keates comments on today’s A-level results:
“It is essential that all students wanting a place at university are treated fairly. What is needed from the university sector is greater transparency and accountability in relation to their admissions and selection practices.
“However, with over 200,000 successful A level students expected to miss out on a university place, there is an even more pressing problem arising from the coalition government’s funding cuts.
“Disproportionately, young people from ordinary families will dominate amongst those students who will lose out on a university place and who will not be able to secure a job to tide them over until next year.
“We cannot afford to squander the talent, hard work and enthusiasm of young people. Investment in education and training will remain critical to the country’s economic recovery and to achieving a fairer society.
“The coalition government’s cuts are deeply regressive and are hitting hardest young people from ordinary families and those who are the least privileged in our society.”
