Labour ‘big winner’ from Lib Dem slump

Disillusioned voters who backed the Liberal Democrats at the general election appear to be turning to Labour rather than the Conservatives, a poll suggests.
Research by ComRes for the Independent found 22% of Lib Dem voters would now vote Labour, up from 15% last month.
By contrast just seven per cent would switch to the Lib Dems’ coalition partners, the Conservatives.
The poll will underline the fears of many Lib Dems that entering into a formal coalition with the Tories will hurt the party’s prospects in elections next May.
Britain’s third party’s poll performance improved to 18%, however, after suffering a summer slump to the mid-teens from the Lib Dems’ 23% general election vote share.
The Conservatives remain in the lead, on 38% to Labour’s 34%, but the main opposition party enjoyed a two-point swing in their favour.
“I would be amazed if Labour is not ahead by Christmas,” one Tory source told the newspaper.
