MRSA Action UK: EQUITY AND EXCELLENCE: LIBERATING THE NHS
The Government White Paper "Equity and excellence: Liberating the NHS" introduces changes to the structure and governance of healthcare. There is little detail on the prevention and control of healthcare associated infections and the lack of a mention on antimicrobial prescribing, stewardship and how this may impact on infection rates. It is apparent that we have reached a plateau in reducing the reportable infections and innovation and good governance will play a significant role in understanding the problems and driving infections to the irreducible minimum. We need assurances that this will remain high on the Government's agenda in terms of resources and investment in the right areas. Preventing infections must remain a high priority for survival from groundbreaking surgeries to happen.
Regulation, relying on patient feedback and the proposed new body Healthwatch are all featured in the White Paper. MRSA Action UK will be drafting a response and in addition to this we have joined forces to respond with Diabetes UK, C.diff Support, the Kidney Alliance, the National Kidney Federation and other patient stakeholders to ask for real and meaningful engagement with patient organisations and charities in shaping healthcare and supporting patients and carers. For more information email info@mrsaactionuk.net
MRSA Action UK: INQUIRY INTO THE OPERATION OF THE COMMISSIONING, SUPERVISORY AND REGULATORY BODIES IN RELATION TO THEIR MONITORING ROLE AT MID STAFFORDSHIRE NHS FOUNDATION TRUST
We will be combining our approach to the response to the White Paper with the response to the Mid Staffs Public Inquiry. The terms of reference of the Public Inquiry are to consider the regulators and their role in acting on the information on the high mortality rates and patient and relatives' complaints. Of concern is the Strategic Health Authority's role, there may be some improvements at Mid Staffs however within the same Strategic Health Authority's remit is the University Hospital of North Staffs and they continue to have the highest number of C.diff cases in the country, data is not being reported on a weekly basis in the timely manner that other hospitals are reporting it, which is now a mandatory requirement. We are concerned that this marker of patient safety appears to be being ignored and that patients will suffer as a consequence. The regulators reports are available at the Mid Staffs Inquiry website at http://www.midstaffsinquiry.com
