Spending review
George Osborne has unveiled the spending review, but will it really hit the rich as hard as the poor?
The chancellor said it was a progressive measure and that those with the “broadest shoulders” would share their part of the burden in reducing the deficit.
But opposition politicians were keen to point out that his claims of equality during the last Budget were quickly extinguished when the Institute for Fiscal Studies (IFS) said it was not progressive.
The government’s Liberal Democrat coalition partners said the spending review had protected the vulnerable from cuts.
