Unison: Cold comfort to those facing dole
Dave Prentis, general secretary for Unison, comments on the OBR growth predictions released today:
“Whichever way you look at it, the latest economic forecast makes grim reading.
“The Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR) may have cut its estimate of job losses in the public sector, but that that will be cold comfort to the 330,000 people facing the dole.
“As more workers from the public and private sector lose their jobs, spending power goes down and that will only slow down our sluggish economy further.
“Public sector workers who escape the government’s jobs axe still face a three- year pay freeze. Workers will not have the money to spend in local shops and businesses, creating a downward economic spiral in the private sector and beyond.
“It’s time for the government to admit that it has got things wrong and recognise that there are alternatives to their slash and burn politics.”
