The ongoing row over phone hacking took another casualty today, when it was confirmed a News of the World news editor had been suspended.

Ian Edmondson was suspended over “serious allegations” of phone hacking before Christmas.

“The allegation is the subject of litigation and our internal investigation will take place in tandem with that,” a spokesperson for the newspaper said.

“If the conclusion of the investigation or the litigation is that the allegation is proven, appropriate action will be taken.

“The News of the World has a zero tolerance approach to any wrongdoing.”

The row over phone hacking at the News of the World threatened at one point to ruin the career of Andy Coulson, former editor and current director of communications in Downing Street.

The Metropolitan police handed a file of evidence to the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) last year.

Keir Starmer, director of the CPS confirmed it would not press charges against Mr Coulson last month.
