Labour: Covenant decision made for wrong reasons
Shadow defence secretary Jim Murphy comments on the decision to enshrine the military covenant in law:
“We back any measures which support our armed forces and will study these closely to ensure there is new investment which will deliver real benefits.
“But let’s be clear, this is not an act of conviction but an act of submission.
“For months ministers have refused to enshrine the covenant in law.
“Only after a strong campaign by the public, the Royal British Legion, MPs and the media have the government given way.
“They have done the right thing, but for the wrong reasons.”
