Burt: Companies mustn’t dodge move against surcharges
Liberal Democrat MP Lorely Burt comments on the announcement that excessive surcharges on debit and credit card transactions will be banned:
"The announcement is extremely welcome and is a major step forward in consumer rights.
"I understand the need for consultation and for companies to take time in implementing these changes, but we should make every effort to ensure it's not unduly long or complex. We cannot afford to allow this issue to linger.
"If companies want to maintain customer loyalty and respect they must begin the process now, and not spend the next 12 months trying to find ways to dodge it.
"This is not about punishing corporations; it is about giving consumers the information, value for money and the service they deserve."
