Ministers should not bow to pressure from oil and gas giants
Commenting on speculation that the government is set to significantly scale back its windfall tax on oil and gas giants, TUC general secretary Paul Nowak said:
“This would be a gift to energy giants who have enjoyed a record-breaking cash bonanza, while families across Britain have struggled to heat their homes.
“Oil and gas companies have been allowed to get away with treating the British public like cash machines.
“The government has left billions on the table by refusing to impose a proper windfall tax on excessive profits. Time and time again ministers have refused to take action to fix our broken energy market and stop this obscene price gouging.
“And now, the Conservative government is considering significantly scaling back this already-moderate windfall tax.
“Ministers should not bow to pressure from oil and gas giants. We need a government on the side of working people.
“It’s time to end the energy racket once and for all. We could all have lower bills if government properly taxed excessive profits, introduced a social tariff and created public ownership of new clean power.”
