This’ll go down well…. MPs set for £20K pay rise
MPs are set to receive a pay rise of between £10,000 and £20,000 after an inquiry into their remuneration by Commons authorities.
The Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority (Ipsa) is looking at a pay rise within those margins, but is likely to suggest a figure towards the lower end of the spectrum.
The move is likely to spark anger however, especially as the public struggles with rising prices and stagnant wages.
MPs no longer have the power to set their own salary, but the rise would be beneath their own estimates of what their salary should be.
A survey released last January showed most MPs believe their pay of £66,000 should rise to £83,000. Many believe it should be over £100,000.
John Bercow is understood to be sympathetic to the demands.
Ipsa's two-year review into MPs' remuneration will publish its recommendations next month and they will then go to consultation.
Any changes would not come into effect until after the general election, however.
